We're thrilled to be welcoming Demelza Fox back to our stage once more. If you saw her at our Baroque Ball you will have been enthralled by her poise and grace with her Madame de Pompadour act. Read on to find out more about what inspires this burlesque beauty:
What is your main performance inspiration?
I get inspiration from everywhere, stupid conversations, jokes with friends, books, travels, but usually it's music or colour at the moment.I'll find a juicy colour that I want to smother myself in, or a painting with the most wonderful shade of blue, and I'll create an act as an excuse to use that colour.
Usually everything comes down to music in the end. I dance and perform because music is so beautiful and amazing and I have to move to it. Performing is an excuse to let music and beauty be important.
What do you love most about burlesque and cabaret?
I love how freeing it is.
I love how you get all kinds of everything.
I love how it's about the performer's individual magic, wether that's being magnetic or miming the Titanic or playing a mean mouth trumpet.
I love how you have permission to create something incandescently beautiful, and also permission to create crazy nonsense.
You can be a diamante' showgirl, or a drag wizard in a beard. I think coming from years as a dancer where the emphasis was really on making elegant and lovely dances and movements, the opportunity to just do what I think is funny and rude and stupid with big props is just irresistible.
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
I think the winner would have to swimming with sharks in an aquarium dressed as a mermaid, having guitar sharks and nurse sharks swim past me and hanging out with clouds of yellow fishes. Unforgettable and amazing.
Can you give us a retro or burlesque style tip?
Hmmm, red lipstick, and dressing to the nines in whatever the hell you want - just not jeans!
Demelza will be showcasing a unique new act at our Wonderland Ball!
Demelza also teaches burlesque in Cambridge - if you would like confidence-building lessons that will make you feel good enough to strut your stuff whether on and off the stage, you should definitely check them out!
