One of the costume aspects we're lookign forwards to exploring at our next Halloween is dark Victoriana. The Victorians loved their fabulous, if sometimes uncomfortable clothing. It's a style that's all about shape and form with over the top flourishes and accessories - right up our street! Assembling an outfit was more like a feat of engineering - with multiple layers that helped to achieve the ideal form of the time. The arduous process of building this up has been well detailed on several blogs. We've picked a couple of our favourites to save you time! First of all a video showing what goes into a costume - we particularly like this one as you can see the various layers clearly, and what order they go on in! For the low of bandwidth or those who simply don't like videos, we found this blog. We particularly like how simple it is! With the Victorian era being heavily featuring the corset of course, no costume guide would be complete without mentioning the theatrical outfits of the time. We could describe them to you. but we thought it would be better just to show you! Of course, we couldn't possibly look at Dark Victoriana without a nod to Penny Dreadful - the TV series that's brought a huge selection of classic horror characters to light through the lens of the Victorian era. There are two 'must read' blogs here for you if you want to delve into this as a source of inspiration:
