We are very excited to be hosting Lou Safire at our masquerade ball - performer of boylesque, aerial and sideshow acts, he's a truly multi-talented performer whose shows take no prisoners. He's been kind enough to share a little about his inspirations, experiences and even a couple of fashion tips!
What is your main performance inspiration?
Tim Burton's twisted fantasies and a fascination with the old side shows has definitely had a great influence in the way I perform as an artist. That and the glamour of Las Vegas combined.
I love to manipulate the traditional styles, like fan dancing, by incorporating my personal feelings and a fierce attitude into the performance.Inspiration kind of just happens, I’ll see something, a costume piece or a hear a bit of music and it develops from there.
My acts develop themselves, I work out what needs to happen at what part and the in between parts come from the ether, I just love to go out and have fun! I aim to create acts that everyone can enjoy, be it a strip tease or a bed of nails act. Each of my acts contains a degree of showmanship and I like my audience to feel they are part of the show.
What do you love most about burlesque and cabaret?
What’s not to love?
I love everything about it. The wide variety or performance art that is created by performers and the audiences bring together the past present and future of vaudeville, all in one show!
I love to travel and see that different areas, even in the UK, have different styles and it’s great to be able to perform with different cultures of performance.
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
Making my international debut at the Stockholm Burlesque Festival in 2014 was a big highlight in my career. The festival was great fun and I met wonderful performers from all over the world. But every show has its own highlight in their own way and I have enjoyed every show.
Can you give us a retro or burlesque style tip?
This one is for the guys… Moustachioed Gent? Waistcoats and hats? Rockabilly Retro? Bit of guyliner?
YES, YES, YES, YES!
Jeans and a baggy T-shirt – no no no!
Always be well turned out, there is nothing better than a guy who makes an effort to look sharp.
